It’s that time of year again! Time to take out your journal and set your goals for the new year ahead.
It’s hard to believe that 2019 is about 2 weeks away. I mean… what? I remember last new years eye like it was just the other day. I can’t be the only one, right?
During this time of year goal setting is a major buzz word. (It may be a little cliché, ha!) So whether you’re new to goal-setting or you usually make goals on a regular basis, I want to share 4 goal setting tips with you that will help kick off the new year!
“You have to set goals that are almost out of reach. If you set a goal that is attainable without much work or thought, you are stuck with something below your true talent and potential.”
Steve Garvey
Honestly, in the past I would make goals in my mind and never really write them down. But, this year I have written them down! There’s just something about writing them down that makes them so much more concrete!
4 Goals Setting Tips to Kick off the New Year
Write your goals on paper
So this might sound obvious… but hear me out! Write your goals on an actual notebook or journal instead of an online document or notepad on your phone. Take out your favorite journal, grab pen and get to writing! It makes a huge difference and I encourage you to do it! A digital document is very convenient but pen and paper will make your goals so much more concrete.
Reflect on the past year
Take the time to look back on all of the things that happened in 2018. This will help you assess where you are now and what you can do moving forward. Some questions to ask yourself might be: What were the highs and lows of this year? Big changes that you made in your life? What did you accomplish? Mistakes you made that you could learn from? Who played a positive role in your life and supported you this year?
Visualize how you want 2019 to look and feel
This episode of the Style Your Mind podcast inspired me to include this as a tip for goal setting! It’s something that had never occurred to me before I listened to it but it’s soooo good. Some thing you can do is to visualize and write down the following:
- How do you want 2019 to feel?
- Who do you want to be in 2019?
- How do you want to spend your days?
Be sure to picture and write down exactly how you want things to be like, if there is something or things you didn’t like about how you spent 2018. If you want to work less hours, visualize yourself working less hours. If you want to make more time for self care, visualize yourself treating yourself to more self care. If you want to make more money (can I get an amen?!) visualize yourself doing just that!
What kind of person do you want to be? Do you want to be more loving, more confident, more grateful? Imagine the version of yourself being that way and write it down! How do you want to spend your days? Do you want to spend more time outdoors and connecting with nature? Do you want to spend more time with loved ones? Do you want to spend less time working? Visualize, visualize, visualize.
Seriously, don’t be afraid to dream BIG..which brings me to my next tip…
Dream Big
Let me tell ya something: the only limit we have is our mind. We can achieve anything we possibly want, even if it seems unrealistic. So, friend go grab that pen and open up your favorite journal and get dreaming! Your goals and dreams are the same thing. Don’t limit yourself and make them more “realistic.” Your dreams should scare you!
